Nevada Emissions Testing — What You Need to Know

All information sourced from Nevada DMV. Requirements may change — verify current requirements at dmv.nv.gov.

Who Needs a Smog Check?

Gasoline-powered vehicles 1968 and newer based in the Reno/Sparks area of Washoe County must pass an annual emissions inspection. This includes cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, and vans.

Diesel vehicles with GVWR up to 14,000 lbs are also subject to testing. Check your DMV renewal notice — it will indicate whether your vehicle requires a test.

What Vehicles Are Exempt?

Some vehicles are exempt from emissions testing in Washoe County:

  • Vehicles manufactured before 1968
  • Electric vehicles (no combustion engine)
  • Motorcycles
  • Heavy-duty diesel over 14,000 lbs GVWR
  • New motor vehicles — exempt for the first three registrations

Verify current exemption rules at dmv.nv.gov.

What If I Fail?

If your vehicle fails, you will receive a Vehicle Inspection Report explaining what failed. You can make the necessary repairs and return for a retest.

If your vehicle still fails after qualifying repairs at a Nevada 2G Licensed Authorized Station and meeting the minimum repair cost threshold, you may be eligible for a waiver. Visit dmv.nv.gov/emission.htm for complete waiver requirements.

What to Bring

  • Your vehicle — warmed up (drive at least 15 min before your test)
  • DMV registration renewal card (if you have it)
  • Payment — Cash, Visa, or Mastercard. No checks.

How Long Does It Take?

Most vehicles are done in about 5 minutes. Drive in, drive out. No appointment needed at any of our 5 locations.

Our certified technicians run the inspection quickly so you can get back on the road fast.
